With a great soundtrack and unique (if not disturbing) monsters, The Suffering creates a unique game play experience.

User Rating: 9.5 | The Suffering PS2
With the number of survival horror games on the market, its easy to get lost in the generic play style--find keys, solve puzzles, and adapt to the constrictive movement controls. While this is a surefire formula, it does grow tedious over time, and that is where The Suffering shines.
The Suffering, rather than sticking to the tried and true Resident Evil formula, uses a 3rd Person Shooter tactic instead, which works well against the enemy type due mainly to how they move and attack. It also keeps puzzle solving to a basic minimum, which is bad for those looking for a deep mind-boggling experience, but good for those who seek monster-killing action. As for keys, I recall only one or two, if any. The game also features an interesting back story about Torque, the lead character, and a crime that he's been accused of. What makes this interesting is how apparitions of his family will appear at random points in the game and tell him how much they hate him or love him.
Where the game lacks is how easy an enemy is to defeat on its own. Even with a lowly shiv, when in a one on one bout, you can defeat almost any enemy you come across. Fortunately, to make up for this, enemies usually come in groups, making for slightly difficult bouts.
All in all, The Suffering makes for a promising experience that won't disappointment.
