A classic melding of gameplay, stunning originality and FMV done right.

User Rating: 10 | The Pandora Directive PC
Tex Murphy is a series which has fell to the wayside for many many MANY years, with FMV games falling out of favor as quick as they rose to prominence in the nineties, Tex Murphy had basically gone the way of the dinosaur unfortunately.

The Pandora Directive was the fourth part in the then long running series, Hot off the success of the previous game Under A killing Moon, Access software wanted to create an even better masterpiece....which they did.

Tex Murphy Is one of those old style gumshoes in the vein of sam spade or Chandler....the only problem is he's living in the futuristic wasteland of New San Francisco after world war 3, and is basically a royal screw up who somehow manages to stumble his way into situations, and very well manages to stumble out of them.

He is approached by an old man named Fitzpatrick who hires him to find a missing man which leads to Murder, Conspiracy, and the Roswell alien cover up.
It's fantastic stuff, and the games narrative is one of the main focal points, it is a rich deep and fun narrative that drives you to find out what the hell is going on.

The technology for the game was unparalleled at the time, with the adventure style point and click, playing out in a virtual 3d world. It was basically like playing a much prettier doom, with puzzles to solve and characters to talk to instead of shooting everything.

The FMV videos, whilst cheesy in a good way, is played intentionally, and strikes a nice balance of serious, comedy and flat out action. It's still a "Movie game" that's bar has yet to be raised.

With Tex making his comeback on Project Kickstarter as I type (Over Half way funded whoo hoo!) There hasn't been a better time to discover Tex once again. An absolute pleasure and a masterpiece of gaming that deserves to be in everyone's collection.
