A true jewel of innovations.

User Rating: 9 | The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap GBA
With a platform like the Game Boy Advance and a fairly late release in the console's life, it was difficult to expect anything innovative out of The Minish Cap, even from a Legend of Zelda game. Yet, somehow, Nintendo managed to pull off a true jewel that not only succeeds at being fun but also features numerous surprises and novelties in the gameplay.

The story differs slightly from the class LoZ plot. This time the villain of choice is Vaati instead of being our pig friend Ganon and the princess isn't actually captured, just turned to stone. It's up to you to save the land of Hyrules and its inhabitants: humans and minish, tiny creatures that live everywhere and know magic.

The first innovative aspect is the shrinking that Link can undergo to visit the Minish world. This can be particularly interesting in situation where something as insignificant as a brook can be a whole challenged to cross while in Minish form or enemies that only require one slash of the sword become boss fights when they turn giant. Also, many houses in the town can be revisited in Minish form to discover new areas and secrets.

Also, there is some change in the items used by Link. Yes, we still get the bomb, boomerang and bow BUT we also get new equipment such as a gust jar or a flying cape. These are used in many imaginative situations that require both the thinking and the acting that this franchise is well-known for.

Lastly, an interesting concept introduced in this game are kinstones. Fighting enemies and finding chests can provide you with half pieces of these kinstones. These are all broken into different shapes. Characters all over Hyrule can fuse kinstones with you and chests and sometimes even hidden areas can appear. This adds a certain replay value but it can be quite frustrating to try to remember which character possessed which kinstone.

In overall, gameplay is really the star of this game. Graphics and sounds are so-so but that's only because of the limitations of the console. Otherwise, this game offers a fantastic bundle of innovative features which should please any fan of the adventure genre.
