A wonderful and beautiful remake

User Rating: 7 | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening NS

As someone who played the original Link’s Awakening, I always felt like the game was held back by the technology of the time. Seeing it in this new, very adorable diorama style makes the game much more appealing and fixes many of the issues the old game had.

Story: 6/10

Since the game is a remake of an older game it only makes sense that there isn’t much story involved. The story does however pretty much boil down to Link being stuck on an island and looking for a way to escape. As the game progresses, you get hints that something may happen if you leave the island successfully but I won’t spoil it here

Score: 9.5/10

As always, Zelda music is going to be fantastic and hearing remakes of the classic music from Link’s Awakening is a delight. Tal Tal Heights is particularly amazing.

Characters/Character Development: 4/10

Aside from Link and Marin, there aren’t many characters that are relevant more than a single time in the game making the majority of them pretty forgettable

Graphics: 10/10

The unique diorama style that Link’s Awakening takes is fun and fantastic. You will really take the time to appreciate every little detail that has been added to the characters, backgrounds and enemies.

Gameplay: 7.5/10

Wondering through the world of Koholint Island is a fun and enjoyable experience, but lacks much sense of adventure. Almost every location is either a route to a temple or an area around a village that you walk through time and time again. The two villages in this game also don’t offer much to do which is disappointing given how often you need to be at them. However, playing the game as a linear experience is wonderfully enjoyable.

Difficulty: 7/10 (0 being the easiest, 10 being the hardest) [on hard mode]

The addition of hard mode in this game is an absolutely delight. Since I’ve played the original, this was a nice way to play the game again and certainly made it feel like a fresh new experience. Being defeated doesn’t frustrate you, but makes you feel like something you want to overcome.

Fun: 8/10

I had fun playing this game and revisiting something I played long ago with being able to see it as something redone for a new generation was an absolute delight. However, the game feels pretty linear so when you take it for what it’s worth, you’ll have a wonderful time with a wonderful Zelda game.
