Fun, although limited.

“Legend of the Mystical Ninja” is a quality Virtual Console pick, although a limited one. The central gameplay is simple enough, however awkward controls make it less than intuitive. Although hampered by its “retro” control scheme, the core gameplay is still fun and engaging. The simultaneous two player action is fun, but can lead to inadvertent mishaps. The action-adventure with RPG elements is a very welcome addition to those games that can sustain gaming sessions of both hours and minutes. Simple enough to pick up and play while you’re waiting for some microwave popcorn, yet deep enough to captivate your attention for hours of gaming. The existence of “towns” to explore offer a substitute to an overworld while basic, side scrolling 2D action levels play out much like the action of “Zelda 2” did. (In addition to the side scrolling action levels, the “towns” are populated with inhabitants, enemies, stores, etc…)

I recommend “Legend of the Mystical Ninja” at its Virtual Console price point. (800 points)
