The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night (PS2) A review from a gamer who conquered the Well of Souls...

User Rating: 8.5 | The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night PS2
The second of the new Spyro the Dragon trilogy. The games picks up where the first game, A New Beginning, ended. Easy to follow story with plenty of challenges and finally, a less annoying Sparx.

-The game has amazing graphics, even for PS2, I can only imagine the graphics on a PS3 or Wii.

-Great background music, however the voice-to-music ratio seems to muffle out what's being said during a few cut-scenes.

-Controls are relatively the same compared to any of the other Spyro games, however they are more precise and easier to manage.

-The various attacks dealt by Spyro help keep the game from becoming boring or monotenous.

---Fire: Best attack to use on enemies below you, and it also increases Spyro's overall attacks power. Instead of having a Fire Bomb like in the first, he now has a Flaing Headbutt and is very fast and rather accurate.

---Ice: They finally made this breath usuable! This is now an Polar Bomb that you can vary the range with and it can keep Spyro's overall health relatively safe. He also has an Ice Tail attack, which is a swift move that knocks away surrounding enemies and freezes the smaller ones.

---Earth: No longer a breath technically, but now takes that shape of a Flail. Spyro can spin this around, with great force to remove surround enemies. Also, Spyro can do an Earth Pound, which crushes those around him and temporarily makes Spyro invulnerable to enemy attack.

---Electric: It isn't as useful as the electric current from A New Beginning, but is still a very useful method of attack. Now Spyro can launch electric spheres which can bounce closer to enemies, then Spyro can detonate with the SQUARE button. Also, Spyro can use and electric spin to move about the enemies and send them flying, a very powerful attack.

---Darkness: Useable only during the final fight, until you complete the 5 Dragon Challenges. This element also changes Spyro's appearance, he becomes a black dragon. This form gives greater resistance to damage and his mana is drained very slowly. The only downside is his melee attack power is severely cut.

--Dragon Time: New to the series, Spyro can temprarily slow down time. This seems like it'd be pretty useless, howver they make sure it's necessary and it can save your purple butt in tight situtaions. Also, it regnerates the power itself after a while, so no need to hunt for non-exsisting "time gems".

--Fury Attacks: Like in the first, thsi attack takes out anyone and everyone is Spyro's path, but now it has been upgraded. The Fury's after effect depends on the breath element you are currently using. Fire greatly increases any attack he uses, while the Fury's effect remains. Ice reduces damage taken by enemies and freezes those just out of range. Earth keeps Spyro completely invulnerable until the after effect wears off. Electricity boosts Spyro's speed and slows the Dragon Time meter's drainage.

--Flying: Yes, Spyro can still double-jump, glide and hover. However, it appears that Spyro's double-jump has improved allowing him to jump higher than in A New Beginning.

--Dragon Relics: There are a total of 10 Relics in the game. Five of the Relics increase Spyro's health meter, these Relica are red. The other Five increases Spyro's breath mana meter, these Relics are green.

--Scribers Quills: These aren't necessary to complete the game, however the more you find, the more bonus artwork is unlocked. There are 40 Pens in total.

--Dragon Challeneges: Unlocked in the Extra's menu after completing the game. Each Challenge is different and there are 5 total.

--Enemies have also had their arsenal upgraded. They now move faster, move is closer to attack and have stronger attack power. This adds a better challenge for the latest game.

--The bosses are no longer run around in circles and use which ever breath you please. Each boss is unique with the level you're in. Using your speed and the correct element greatly changes the outcome of the battle.

All in all, the game is able to keep the story in mind and flowing easily and it keeps the challenges fresh and different. Also, keep you eye out fot the subtle return of an "old friend" that will be revealed in the final game of the Legend of Spyro trilogy.
