Sometimes "old school" does not mean "great"

There are some of us out there who have a special place in our hearts for "old school" RPG's, since they bring memories back from and old age now gone (but not forgotten). There are a lot of games that were great in their time and that now are being "resurrected" for the new generation to enjoy and the old to revisit. The Legend of heroes 2 is and old school RPG but it belongs to an obscure series that were never released before in the USA, but now thanks to BANDAI is seeing the day of light in the great PSP. For starters TLOH 2 is a nice looking game, the graphics are not mind- blowing but they are decent enough with a nice palette of colors and decently animated sprites for the characters. Most of the spells are so-so but the "spirit magic" spells are good. the rest of the game is just good, but remember that this game dates from 1999 and when it was first released it did not look like this, so I will give them credit for reworking the graphics this much. Next comes the fighting system, which is very straighforward and just simple to use. Nothing fancy here really, perhaps being able to spot enemies in the road was innovative in 1999 but it does not bother, on the contrary since I personally prefer to see and choose either to fight or to run beforehand than having all those ramdom fights, so I will give them credit on this too. The music is "RPG" in all is aspects with some nice tunes and a varied repertory but there's not a lot to remember here since the music is not bad but is not excellent either. This is not very important but some of the text feels "old school" too; with some mispellings and dull translation. Perhaps this was done like this just to add to thefeelingof "old". One of the most important aspects of an RPG is the story; it is it's soul and in TLOH 2 the story is interesting at first but later on it looses steam, I do not know about you but the very main reason to keep playing a game like this is because of it's story and the other factors (graphics, music and combat system, etc) count too but, you can forgive so-so graphics, you can forgive a not so easy to pick up combat system but you cannot forgive a bad story and don't take me wrong the story on this game is not bad, far from it , is just that you have a lot of backtracing to do in order to trigger events that sometimes you get lost at what you are suppose to do. When you arrive at a town you have to do this, and talk to that person in order to advance which it would not be bad if the game was more specific about what you should do next, so is very, very easy to get lost and most of the time this "side" missions are not even worth the trouble, so it kind of disappoints you. AH! and there's this feeling of : "Was that all?" at the end of the game that will make you wonder why they not only fixed the graphics but some of the plot developtment as well, however you have to remember that this is an "old school" game, but on second though not all of the "old school" is worth of being resurrected, and some of it is better to leave it in the shadows from which it came from. (now; When are they going to bring a Final Fantasy Tactics adaptation for the PSP?)
