Yep. Strategy or not, many (if not MOST) of the later Boss encounters are a roll of the digital dice. In fact, at one point I was forced to *gulp* CHEAT in order to move on with the story. And that is one of my main gripes with this game; certain unavoidable and crucial sections are essentially IMPOSSIBLE if you don't have the 'correct' skills and/or lineup. You will know you're in for it when the game actually gives a WARNING that saving at this spot may PREVENT YOU FROM MOVING FORWARD IN THE GAME IF YOU CAN'T DEFEAT THE BOSS. Yes, I scoffed at first, because my team up till now was gleefully handing opponents their collective ass. How miserably wrong I was! After countless reloads and scouring teh internets for strategies and advice, the only option was to use a trainer to cheat my way though, if I wanted to actually continue playing this game. It's one thing to be difficult, but to barely scrape your way past one exhausting Boss fight (and this fight went on for nearly twenty minutes) only to immediately find another EVEN HARDER Boss that kills your troops in ONE HIT...well, I think those JRPG programmers are hitting the Sake a little too hard.
The forums are chock full of gamers complaining about the seemingly insurmountable difficulty (as well as those smug little dicks that smirk 'It isn't all that hard I did it in 2 tries') and many have even quit playing out of sheer frustration. This is the result of poor play testing and planning on the dev's part. I play games for ENJOYMENT, not to ramp up my blood pressure till I need anger management therapy fer crissakes! My keyboard took 2K of physical damage alone! So, to wrap this up in a nice neat little package for you; pretty graphics, some bland repetitive indoor dungeons, absolutely punishing Boss fights mixed in with nearly invincible game-stopping encounters, and you have a recipe for an otherwise enjoyable but incredibly frustrating experience. For hard core gamerz only. IMHO
