I dusted off my copy of Skyrim a few days before the release of Dawnguard and finished up the last remaining questline I had.. Playing the game again after a few months got me more excited for the new content.. When you first start playing you won't notice much difference in the game, except that the dungeons appear much darker which may require using a light spell to brighten things up. Your first hint to starting the Dawnguard DLC comes from a random town guard that informs you that they are looking for vampire hunters and there location which is east of Riften.. When you visit there you are recruited and asked to help in a mission to find out why the vampires are interested in a certain cave.. At the Dawnguard you are introduced to the first new weapon a crossbow which is decent but my character was never any good at archery.. Inside the cave you discover a mysterious woman who asks you to help her return home, and is at this point where you make your choice of either joining with the vampires or siding with the Dawnguard..

During my playthrough I ended up siding with the vampires which leads you down a lengthy questline which will take about 10-15 hours.. Most of these quests I found very enjoyable and kept me interested in the story of Dawnguard.. I would say this is one of the better questlines for Skyrim as a whole.. You are given the ability to transform into a vampire lord as soon as you side with them.. The vampire lord has a large amount of abilities and spells seperate from your main character.. You can raise the dead, summon gargoyles, do a choking throw grip on enemies ect. which is all good fun.. By using the standard magic attack to kill an enemy you will absorb the life force which gives you experience to level up the perks of the Vampire lord.. One problem I had playing as the Vampire lord is that you cannot go through doorways or loot corpses while in the vampire lord form.. It requires you to return to human form then back again which each time takes about 10 seconds.. That can become somewhat annoying.. If you side with the Dawnguard you are given a perk tree to level up as the werewolf form..

I don't think the best part of Dawnguard is the new abilities and weapons though.. There are 2 completely new areas to explore which are both completely unique in appearance.. I found exploring these areas to be somewhat awe inspiring, mysterious and beautiful.. There are also many new sidequests to undertake for either faction as well.. There are quite a few new enemy types which all are great fun to fight against, also being new items, gems and areas to discover and a new shout.. There is also the ability to change your characters appearance.. All of this carries over after the main story quests have been finished so even after your done with Dawnguard, of course in Skyrim there is always more to do.. If you were as addicted to skyrim as I was and put in hundreds of hours into it, then this DLC should add some life to the game and continue playing it..
