User Rating: 10 | Tekken 5 PS2
On the 10th anniversary of Tekken, Namco is releasing Tekken 5, a celebration of the best in Tekken. In every way, it's a classic and reconfirms Tekken as king of fighting games. In the awesome but shocking intro, Heihachi and Kazuya awake unconsciousness, after their battle with Jin. A squadron of Jacks drop from the skies into Honmaru and battles with Heihachi and Kazuya. The Mishima managed to hold off the assault by the robots by working as a team, but Kazuya betrays Heihachi and throws him to the robots. The Jacks manage to hold Heihachi up and detonate, taking Heihachi with them along with half the mountain. Feng Wei, Asuka Kazama and Raven join veterans like Paul Phoenix in this battle royale. All in all, 31 characters join the fray. From the gargantuan muscular Craig Marduk to the petite nimble Ling Xiaoyu, everyone will find some character to their liking. Every character has an extensive movelist, some updated and some brand new. Each fighter has his/her strengths and weaknesses. Plus famous moves like WGF have been tweaked to make it juggle. While certain characters do have disadvantages to other characters, a quick half life combo can turn the tide quickly. So learn to sidestep, practice reversals/parries or make the player miss. The new crush system has made counters much easier. No longer will some moves can counter whereas other moves can't, having the same hit property. This is truly one of the best feature in Tekken. Another new feature to Tekken is the ability to earn customize characters with items and clothings, like the Weapon Master mode from SC. There are a few ways to earn gold in this game, either by beating the Story Battle mode, the Arcade mode or the Devil Within mode. The best way to earn gold is by beating the ghost AI of Tekken players in Arcade mode, it's a good way to practice your technique if you're playing by yourself. The result could be hilarious when you see "No. 1" Paul Phoenix, from Spectre, versus Ling Xiaoyu in a panda suit. The graphics are sharp and crisp, a bit better than Soul Calibur II. Characters are nicely detailed, clothings and muscles flex and bend in reaction to each move. The backgrounds are nicely detailed, from the dragon mountain to the rose garden, and serve as eye candy. Background musics have retained their electronic feel, something that older Tekken fans appreciate. If your nostalgic for the olden days, Tekken 5 has alot to offer you. Arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3 are included in this awesome package. They even retain all of their original music and the PS1 graphics looks a bit smoother now running on the PS2. Tired of fighting 1 on 1 and wants to take on an entire army? Play Devil Within, the mode where you play as Jin. You have the standard movements via the analog stick and the kick, punch and jump buttons. Even though this is an updated version of Tekken force, this mode is still kinda blase. Tekken 5 is a classic. It takes some of the best gameplay features in previous Tekken and mix them all up in this game. And with its bundle of Tekken 1, 2 and 3, players will enjoy Tekken 5 for hours upon end and being rewarded at the same time by the customization system. Truly, Tekken 5 is one of the best fighting games.
