The king of iron fist tournament Real score=86%

User Rating: 8.5 | Tekken 3 (PlayStation the Best) PS
Tekken 3 sees many familiar combatants battling it out to become the king of iron first tournament for a third time. In addition to the returning cast you'll see many new faces who'll you be eager to fight with. Tekken 3 is deep, astonishingly deep. With over 20 fighters, many game modes and a wealth of combos and moves to learn Tekken 3 will keep you occupied for a long time. It's graphics are superb and the FMV sequences are stunning for a playstation 1 game. Each character is different and you'll need to spend a while finding your favourite. Of course less then half are available from the start. You unlock most of the others through arcade mode.

Arcade mode in short is a series of 10 matches against other fighters you currently have unlocked. Each bout like in every mode consists of a best of three rounds. Everytime you complete arcade mode you will unlock one new character and be treated to your characters special FMV sequence. It can get annoying continually having to play arcade mode to unlock every character and it can get tedious after a few goes. Especially if you want every character as soon as possible.

Another mode is Tekken force mode. Tekken force mode is a side scrolling beat-em up. Their are four stages to get through with a boss at the end of each one. The bosses are other tekken characters. Tekken force mode is fun but it's not all that great. It is the right length but it can be clumsy to control at times and can get boring. There are two other main modes. These are survival mode and time attack mode. In survival mode you play an unlimited number of one round matches in a row until you die. You carry damage from each bout to the next only regaining a small amount each time. It's great fun and at times can get really tense if you're near death. Time attack mode is a series of timed matces. Each match is a best of three rounds encounter. You have to complete every match within the overall time limit or you lose. One drawback with both modes is the inability to pause in either which to me seems a bit strange.

The other modes are vs mode, practice mode, team battle mode and Tekken ball mode. VS mode is basically two player, Practice mode is where you can practice combos etc but sadly not proper matches, Team battle mode is where you pick a team of eight characters and battle until one team is completely out and tekken ball mode is an unlockable version of volleyball. You have to use your characters moves to bash the beach ball back and force acroos the net without it bouncing. You lose health if it lands on your side. The player who dies first loses. Tekken ball mode is a fun diversion from plain old fighting but it is unlocke dlast so it will take you a while to unlock.

A big problem with Tekken 3 is the lack of one off matches agains the cpu. It's disappointing and I see no reason why it isn't in the game. I know there is a practice mode but I think an actual battle mode ffor that would have been better. However all said and done Tekken 3 is a fun, exciting fighting game and probably the best on playstation. Fans of fighting games who can forgive the small niggles here and there will love it. Although it probably isn't good enough to convert non fans of the genre.
