Even if you don't like JRPGs, the battle system alone is enough to have Vesperia keep you in its grasp.

Tales of Vesperia was a surprise for me. The first time I played the game, it was a rental. I didn't have very high expectations because I had never played a Tales game, and I was growing sort of tired of the cliche anime characters JRPGs are known for. When I booted up the game I was greeted with an animated video backed with rock music that could have been a Youtube AMV.

But as soon as I started the game, my feelings for JRPGs changed.

Once I started fighting, I was hooked. This is not a turn based game. It is a free form arena with the ability to attack as much as you please. One button for normal melee attack, one button for blocking, and the ability to map out your special attacks on the right stick, and a combination of A and the left stick. You learn new techniques through different weapons, so using different equipment has its perks. Even if one blade is weaker than the other, it may have an incredibly useful ability. There are no random encounters either, (but I have not played a game with random encounters in a while, aside from Pokemon).

The story wasn't anything amazing, but it fulfilled its purpose. I wasn't bored throughout the game, and it was pretty interesting, but nothing award winning. The characters were fun, but a bit cliche. However, I cared about all of them in the end because even though they were unoriginal, they had personalities, and the game wielded that to great effect. That goes fore the heroes and the villains.

The environments were visually pleasing, and the dungeons were very well mapped out. It kept you on a certain path with the ability to explore. And some of them had puzzles that were pretty difficult but nothing you couldn't figure out, (with the exception of the last dungeon in the game that really kicked my ***).

In all, Tales of Vesperia ended up being bought and completed. I couldn't stop playing until I finished it. And the ending was satisfying! Hard to say about a lot of games out there now. So if you're a fan of JRPGs and fun battle systems, then check Vesperia out! I guarantee you'll love it.
