Pure rhythm among the family of rhythm games.

User Rating: 7 | Taiko Drum Master (w/Taiko Controller) PS2
Taiko Drum Master is one of the many peripheral laden games that requires something more than the dual shock to play as intended. A huge taiko drum comes with the game, along with two smooth plastic sticks to pound on it with. It can detect being hit on four areas, left and right on the edges and the two halves of the surface of the drum.

The rhythm game begins with an ear piercing introduction by a living breathing taiko drum character. Once you select a song and difficulty level (all controllable from the drum), you start the game. Red, blue, green and yellow dots come across the screen, queuing you to hit either the center or edge of the drum with one or two sticks.

Unlike other rhythm games there is not much outside of very precise drum hitting, with little room for error. There are characters in a loose story, but nothing to intrigue you.

If you enjoy rhythm for rhythm sake you will be delighted with Taiko Drum Master. However, if unlocking songs and seeing movie clips does not satisfy, you may be disappointed. The songs are a nice mix, hopefully you should hear something you like. More technique besides the few types of drum hits may have made for more of a "game". The mini-games help, but are more of a novelty.
