An excellent stealth game to play for anyone looking for some decent PS1 stealth action.

User Rating: 8.2 | Syphon Filter PS
One of the first big titles made by Sony's development studio, 989, Syphon Filter is a 3rd person stealth shooter where you take on the role of Gabe Logan. He is part of an organization that is currently investigating a new terrorist threat in the form of a biovirus named Syphon Filter. You start off with a bomb situation in Washington before heading to various international locales to stop the threat. You'll have to complete many tasks from diffusing bombs to administering antidotes to finding the creators of the virus itself. The plot generally stays on track and is full of the usual twists one would expect from an espionage game. The graphics are quite good with textures in all the unique areas of the game. A cathedral mission later on in the game showcases some rather spectacular imagery. The music is always appropriate and actually is well orchestrated. The control can take some getting used to. Several of the buttons have multiple functions that occasionally cause undesirable actions. The strafe feature feels inadequate while autoaim is occasionally erratic, leaving the player with occasional cheap shots while you re-establish a lock. While the controls are not as good as FPS controls, they work surprisingly well. The story is definitely the star here as the plot is actually professionally made and it someone compensates for some of the weak controls. Some tense moments are created as you try to stop the plans of the terrorists and timed missions. 989 made sure that the game was high quality, however they neglected to spend more time on the controls and that harms the overall experience. While its not the best PS1 game, it is certainly worth a play and anyone into the spy genre will enjoy it.
