The original Super Smash Bros. holds up well in 2011, and plays great with the new controls.

User Rating: 8 | Super Smash Bros. N64
Super Smash Bros. is a unique fighting game series that emphasizes high jumps and movement instead of complicated button presses. The object of the game is to knock your opponent off the stage and into an out of bounds area instead of reduce their stamina. The original came out more than ten years ago on the N64, and it was acclaimed for its fan service and fun gameplay.

The same holds true in this day and age; the polygons may be simple, but the joy of fighting as Samus vs. Mario remains the same. The game features two main modes - classic and versus. In classic you go through 10 fights against different opponents and face off against an oversized version of bowser at the end. In between fights are minigames such as break the targets and board the platform to increase your total score.

The real reason to get this game is its versus mode. In it you can customize the frequency of item drops, pick the CPU difficulty and battle it out with up to three other computer or player characters. There are many interesting combinations to try out and something for everyone.

Despite what some are saying, Super Smash Bros. is deeper than it seems. You must factor in the distance between you and your opponent and carefully choose the right move so that you aren't left in a bad position if your attack misses. Different characters attacks do more damage and different attacks knock players different ways. And knowing when to block and grab is what seperates the casual from the hardcore.

All in all, Super Smash Bros. is a must have on the virtual console. I give it an 8 out of 10 because the amount of content doesn't quite match modern standards.
