Up there with Goldeneye and Mario Kart as one of the greatest N64 games.

User Rating: 9.1 | Super Smash Bros. N64
I bought this game about 8 months ago (Summer 2005) to re-live the greatness of Super Smash Bros. After purchasing this game I went to my friends house and was immediately hooked again. When this game came out in 1999, it was an amazing fighting game that allowed for a group of friends to choose their favorite character and beat each other up with unique moves and a large array of special weapons.

The graphics of this game were a prime example of what the N64 can produce. The characters were nicely detailed for a N64 game, and the levels all had subtle touches that made them look great. The animations for the characters attacks were all very smooth, and surprisingly, the frame rate never drops and as a result no action stopping slow-downs occur.

There are tons of characters and levels to choose from and this is the prime reason that you can just pick this game up and play anytime without getting bored. You can play as Mario, Peach, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Samus, Donkey Kong, Link, etc., and there are eight stages to choose from which include Yoshi's Island, Hyrule Castle, Peach's Castle, and Saffron City. Each character has a unique set of moves, allowing players to become an expert with a certain character. Along with the vast array of moves you can use, many special objects will appear throughout a match. These objects include swords, baseball bats, stars, a hammer, and everyone’s favorite the Pokeball. By using these objects a player can easily gain the upper hand in a match and get two or three quick knockouts. The different levels each have a unique setting, and as a result the different levels each offer a unique playing experience.

There is a single-player mode, but you will not be spending anytime in that area of the game, therefore nothing will be said about it here. The real value to this game is its multiplayer compatibility. You have four choices of types of vs. modes to play, which are Time, Stock, Team Time, and Team Stock. If you choose the Time option, you can set the time limit you want to play, and after that time limit is up the team with the most KO's wins. If you choose Stock, you set the number of KO's needed to win the game, and the first player to reach that number wins. When you get four players into the action you will really experience what this game is all about.
