A fun Strategy RPG, and an improvement over SRT:A.

User Rating: 7.5 | Super Robot Taisen R GBA
*DISCLAIMER* This is a Japanese game, all text and so forth is in Japanese, however due to the proliferation of translations, guides, and walkthroughs on www.gamefaqs.com and other sites this game is very import friendly and playable with the help of those guides.*

All Super Robot Taisen(SRT) games share the same basic formula, super robots and real robots from the TV series and movies of the time, with all of their appropriate attacks and abilities, put together in one strategy RPG(SRPG) with a loose story tying them together. So if you are familiar with SRT, or if you like SRPGs then you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect. You command a set number of units, which you usually get to choose, through a number of missions which take place on 2D maps that are laid out on a grid. Through the course of the game you earn credits that you then apply to upgrading the stats and weapons of the robots you like, making them stronger in preparation for the end game. Standard SRPG stuff, just with robots and giant monsters instead of goblins and knights. The main SRT games differ from the OG games because the robots and characters included in them are taken from Japanese Anime as well as including the original robots and characters that appear in the OG games exclusively. SRT: Reversal(SRT:R) which came out in 2002, is the second iteration of the SRT franchise on the GBA. The series included that I was particularly looking forward to in this game is Neo Getter Robo since this is one of the only games to include characters from that series. However after playing SRT:R I can say that I much prefer the units from the original Getter, Getter G, and Shin Getter to the Neo Getter units with the exception of Texas Mack, which I found pretty cool.

The gameplay of SRT:R is a marked improvement over SRT:A. The addition of the ability to skip the battle animations makes this iteration play much faster than "A". And there have been some other additions, like the replay system has been changed so that you keep not only the money you earned in previous play-throughs, but also the upgrades you made to any units and the kill scores for your pilots. So on multiple play-throughs you can create some truly powerful units. All in all the gameplay has been significantly improved from SRT:A.

The graphical presentation has also been upgraded. There are more and longer battle animations, as well as a more vibrant color pallet and added effects. While being a few years old this game looks very good for its time and is a good improvement over SRT:A.

The sound is just as good if not better than "A". All of the themes for the various series are of course intact, and there are some added effects that were not present in "A". Overall the sound is improved but not quite as much as the graphical presentation.

SRT:R scores higher in the value department than SRT:A simply because of the revamped replay system and the ability to skip the battle animations. These two additions alone make multiple play-throughs much more attractive than in "A".

All things considered SRT:R is a very good game for the GBA and for the SRT franchise. If you want a good Japanese SRPG for the GBA and you like robots, consider this game, and if you are a SRT collector like me this is definitely worth adding to your collection.
