What a well done game

User Rating: 9.5 | Super Metroid SNES
Man, after playing the original Metroid, I had high expectations for super Metroid, after all it is super. It's a pretty similar game as the original but where the original was lacking, Super Metroid completely picks up the slack. For one, you now finally have a map, thank God right? Second, more stuff! Even though I rarely used things like the power bombs and super missiles outside of boss fights or when they were necessary they were nice additions to the game. As were Samus' new array of acrobatic moves such as the wall jump and grappling beam. I do have to say I found the space jump to be a rather poor addition but by the time you get that you are about ready to beat the game anyway.
The format is about the same as the original, It's a free roam environment where you can travel back and forth from different zones. You have to beat 4 major bosses to unlock the final area but along the way you are forced to fight minor bosses (remember the one where you had to push the guy back into the acid? Intense I know) acquire cool new powerups and tools, and upgrade your arsenal with more missiles and bombs. (I love how they always love to put secret rooms off of secret rooms such as the tunnels under a chozo statue. It's alot more fun to explore this time around as the graphics, movement, enemies, and environments are all much more refined. I have to say I missed some of the classic music of the original including the 'metroid theme', but the music of ridley's lair was pretty intense.
The boss fights were a huge improvement. They all manage to be challenging enough to test your strategy but none are too difficult, (I found the giant flying larvae to be the hardest) The final area and boss fight will be very reminiscent of the original in particular the room with mother brain although the fight is more complicated this time around. Without giving too much away, mother brain has some new tricks this time around. I however, did find the final fight to be pretty easy but very cool nonetheless.
Anyway some final notes, they toned down the difficulty a little which I found to be very agreeable although one could argue with all the energy upgrades it is a little too easy late game aside from the boss fights. you still have to spend lots of time searching for secret entrances although the xray goggles help. I tried really hard to use a guide for as little of the game as possible, but lets be honest, who is going to find that little gap in the wall near your ship that you have to spring jump into. Also, I probably never would have realized that you have to lay a power bomb in the glass tube to fully explore the water zone.
Anyway, awesome game all around, if you're at all serious about gaming you gotta play this.
