An instant classic that stands as one of the greatest Mario experiences to date.

User Rating: 10 | Super Mario Galaxy 2 WII
Summary:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't reinvent the wheel -- it perfects it. This game is truly awe-inspiring and is the most fun I've had with a video game in years. From the lush graphics to the wonderful orchestral score; it has it all. The control is impeccable and the gameplay is expanded on from the first Galaxy. The additions of Yoshi, Rock Mario, and Cloud Mario go a real long way to make everything feel fresh again and are all implemented beautifully. All of the new power-ups are incredibly intuitive to use, so the multitude of options are never dizzying. Furthermore, it should be noted that this game offers a simplified Co-Operative mode where a second player can help Mario by freezing foes and collecting star-bits with an on-screen pointer. While this is mildly amusing; it is a small add-on meant for the more casual player to tag along and enjoy the ride.

Equally important is the art in Galaxy 2, which display a plethora of environments each with their own unique and subtle charm. The graphics are not only technically sound, featuring specular lighting and detailed polygon models, but also artistically brilliant. In addition to the cheerful visuals, Galaxy 2 offers a diverse soundtrack that ranges from classic retro tunes to grandiose symphonies escalating into a full crescendo. To put it simply, this is one of the most polished and refined games you will ever play. There is no shortage of creativity in this masterpiece, it is bursting with ideas and disperses a new gameplay mechanic to uncover in nearly every level. The sheer variety offered from objective to objective is so vast; you'll rarely find yourself ever doing the same thing.

As a testament to the amount of fun this game offers, I kept telling myself, "Just one more star", needless to say, four hours later I realized that I hadn't eaten dinner yet. In addition, the game harkens back to its 2D counterparts in clever and thoughtful ways that make it seem more than just a retread. This careful blend of old and new strikes a great balance between nostalgia and wonder. . If there was one complaint I could wager against the game is that it is over before you know it. With that being said, there are plenty of unlockables, secrets, and extra stars left to explore afterwords. Now... if only other developers could match the amount of fun to be had on the Wii. But don't take my word for it, try it for yourself!
