Super Mario Bros. is still an amazing game, but it's unfortunately inferior to Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Presentation - Just like the original NES version of Super Mario Bros., the story is still the same. Mario and/or Luigi have to save Princess Peach from the evil, Bowser. There are about a total of 32 levels going from (world 1-1 to 8-4). Unfortunately all of the other features that were present in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe has been axed in this version. This also means that you cannot save your progress.

Also, Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels is absent, and the two player battle mode and the other extra modes aren't there. You can still play standard two player modes, but once you lost your last life, you have to start from world 1-1 again. There is a cheat that lets you start from 5-1 for some strange reason. Overall, the presentation falls flat especially in this version of Super Mario Bros.

Graphics - The graphics are almost exactly the same from the original, but everything obviously appears to be smaller. However, the graphics are slightly busted in a few areas. For example, Mario's mustache appears to become either too thin, or it's not there at all. Also, when Luigi has a fire flower, his clothes are still red instead of white and green. Everything else has been nicely rendered, and it feels like the NES version of Super Mario Bros.

Sound - The sound effects and music from the NES version is all here. The music sounds almost exactly the same from the original. They did a nice job translating the music and sound effects.

Game play - If you played the original, you'll find the controls to be exactly the same. The controls are still tight and responsive.

Lasting appeal - I would rather recommend you guys buy Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game boy instead because all of those features brought more content in that game. This version of Super Mario Bros. isn't bad, but it's just not as great as Super Mario Bros Deluxe. Since you can't save your progress, it's a lot more difficult and more frustrating to beat this game.
