Rather difficult game, whose graphics improvement make it easier than its predecessor on the Nintendo, Ghosts 'N Goblins

In Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts you are a hero attempting to save the princess (sound familiar?)

Your main character wears a suit of armor, which, for as long as he is wearing it, prevents the game from being a sudden-death atmosphere.

Once you have been successfully attacked by an enemy throughout gameplay, your armor is gone, leaving you (somewhat literally) naked to the world, and extremely vulnerable (your character has a two-hit limit - and you thought the FBI was strict!)

On the other hand, you can Continue, have nine lives (depending on how you set it at the Options screen) and, throughout the levels, there are several areas that are similar to "checkpoints" in nature, meaning that you can return to that area after dying without having to restart the entire level.

Your supply of weaponry is "unlimited"; though you begin with a default Spear, you find various other weapons (swords, etc.) that can be thrown at will at the game's undead adversaries.

The sound and graphics reflect the move from 8-bit to 16-bit, living up to the expectancy of a game twice as visually and audibly appealing as its predecessor.
There is also the promise of a choice amount of blood and gore for the Faces of Death fan in us all.

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is a difficult, though appealing game for the SNES console, and I recommend it to those who were disappointed in the primitive sound and graphics of the original- though the extreme difficulty is still in place, repeated attempts will prepare you for the near-sudden-death gameplay, and being able to better understand your character and the environment with the improved graphics makes for an easier game than Ghosts 'N Goblins.

If you're wlling to put a significant amount of time into a game that, by no means can be completed "the first time around", and is both painstakingly difficult and yet addictive at the same time, find a copy of Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts.
But don't spend a fortune on this one.
