RTS with staying power!

I picked this up almost five years ago and I just pulled it back out to play it again. I'm amazed at how much fun it still is despite all of the other new and shiny games around.

The basics of the game are pretty easy to pick up, but the difficulty level is steep. By your third mission you're scrambling to catch up to the AI every time. And yes, the AI cheats - they have their strongholds built while you start with almost nothing.

If there's anything that annoys me about this game, it's the missions where you have an "ally". I can't stand AI allies because they end up being more of a hindrance than a help in the long run.

I know you can pick this up at various online places and there's a pack called the Stronghold Collection, which includes 1, 2, and both Stronghold Crusaders. It's totally worth the money just to get everything for this incarnation of the game.

Oh, and the music in it is just awesome.
