Stop using Aspyr for port-jobs! They took an already mediocre game and made it a little bit worse.

User Rating: 6 | Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Ultimate Sith Edition PC
I played portions of the xbox 360 version of SW:TFU last year when it came out. Like most people, I was not overly impressed. The action was very much like "God of War," but in the Star Wars universe. This might seem like a good thing, but to a player who is used to the quality and depth of gameplay offered by Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy... it's not.

Put simply, The Force Unleashed (TFU) is a "hack and slash," semi button-masher 3rd-person action game. It features excellent sound and music (don't most Star Wars games?), but that might be the best part. Don't get me wrong-- the game has some excellent features. The system of "leveling up" allows you to gain more advanced and stronger force powers as you progress through the game, and gives you character a sense of becoming a truly devastating Sith. The graphics were very good on the Xbox 360... but the PC is capable of so much more.. and Aspyr (the company used to port the game to PC.. who is also credited with the botched port job of Turok), did nothing to enhance the game for the most capable platform available.

There are absolutely NO graphics settings to speak of, except for resolution and brightness. That's right. No detail level adjustment, no anti-aliasing or anistropic filtering settings. I was flabbergasted at the laziness of the port. To top it off, the game runs at a maximum frame rate of 30fps, which may be fine for console gamers.. but it's not getting it done for most PC users. The porting was so sloppy in fact that I even get occassional slowdowns on a 3.8ghz E8400/8GB RAM/ATI HD5870 rig at 1680x1050. The game seems to run almost equally badly on nearly any machine, provided you have the recommended requirements or higher.

While it may be great fun to hack and slash you way through storm troopers and rebels, it would be much more fun to do so with some real control over lightsaber movements. The whole game is set up for console gamers with gamepads.. smashing at away at buttons
