Horrible excuse of a Star Wars game.

User Rating: 3 | Star Wars: Lethal Alliance DS

The Good: Familiar Star Wars theme at the beginning of the game, a race level that's kind of cool.

The Bad: Horribly confusing story, bland characters, crappy controls, unresponsive touchscreen, boring level design, lack of health and save points, outdated graphics, stupid sound effects.

Here's a story. A couple years ago, I was in school on an all day field trip to a certain city in a certain state in which I will not name. I was sitting by my friend and he brought games! One of the games he had brought, he had two copies off (the other copy he didn't bring). Being the nice friend he is, he gave it to me! Isn't that nice? Ha ha ha NO! It wasn't! Two years after that, I finally played the game he gave me. The game is Star Wars Lethal Alliance.

In this game, you play as the Twi'lek smuggler Rianna Saren. She's running from her former master and while she's doing this, the Rebel Alliance contacts her and wants her to do something for them. For a price, of course. And then stuff happens! Okay now onto the review.

The story is horrid. I know, the way I said it makes it bad, but the reason why I said it like that is because I had know idea what was going on before I looked it up. The story is so confusing. Not to mention Rianna is as bland and boring as uncooked white rice.

The controls are really bad. It is such a button masher, but it's unfinished. The controls are non-responsive at times, especially the touch screen. You can pretty much kill anyone by jamming on the B button. The camera controls are the best part of the controls, and they're still not great. And that was just Rianna's controls. I haven't even gotten to her robot twerp sidekick's controls. Zeeo, the robot twerp, has horrendous controls. Here's how it's all laid down: You move using the control pad like usual, but it's hard to focus on where you're going because Zeeo is constantly bobbing up and down. It shoots a laser beam using L1. And how do you turn with Zeeo you ask? THE FREAKING TOUCHSCREEN! You literally have to touch the screen with your stylus and move it left and right on the touch screen to turn! Apparently, LucasArts didn't have enough money left in their 50 dollar budget to make actual functioning controls for Zeeo. It also doesn't help that the touchscreen is nonresponsive. You basically have to touch the space in just the right spot and then move the stylus in just the right direction for it to work. Not only does that ruin all control aspects, but all minigame aspects as well, which are in the touchscreen area. Ugh…

The level design is more or less the same. Just some flat platforms at different levels, occasionally some stairs, occasionally some moving platforms, and occasionally some door frames. Not to mention the obstacles are stupid, annoying, and pointless. There are electric fence posts, mines, moving electric fence posts, and moving mines just scattered at random places. Why would they do that? They're just trying to make it overly challenging.

Speaking of which, that's what this game is. Challenging. This game would be easier if the controls didn't suck. It would've been much better and easier if they actually put more health packs. There is like 5 health packs per level. And way more bad guys. Because of the restricted health packs, you will die. A lot. What makes this even more frustrating? IT AUTOSAVES! There is no way for you to pause and save your progress! There aren't even save points! It saves for you! Apparently, pausing your game, pushing a button, and waiting a few seconds to save your data takes too long. I-i- I don't like that. I DON'T LIKE THAT!

The graphics would be impressive, if this game was made in 1994 and if it was on an original PlayStation. But, it was made in 2006 and it's for the DS. Not impressive.

I feel like I should say something positive now, because it has a few. Like the music for the intro! It really brings back memories of watching the old Star Wars movies with my family. And it also has the classic quote, "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…" Just awesome!

Even though I hate the level design, I did find one level that I liked. It was a race level early on in the game. You're basically riding up this… uh… thing, trying to dodge all the electric fence posts and mines coming towards you. That level was actually pretty cool.

Okay, back to negatives. Other than the starting music, the soundtracks are annoying. They're all repetitive and play the exact same thing every time. The sound effects aren't much better. With the exception of the lasers coming from the guns, they're all dorky sounding.

This game also has multiplayer games. I haven't played them, because my DS doesn't connect to the internet and I can't play a computer, but it makes me wonder, why? Does this game really need multiplayer? No. No it doesn't. And besides, who's really playing this game anyway?

Overall, this game is a horrible excuse for a Star Wars game. Other than the opening credits music and that one race level, the game bombs because of a confusing story, horrid controls, boring level design, lack of health packs, no ability to save, bad graphics, and dorky sound effects. It had the potential to be a decent Star Wars game, but it fell short. Way short. If you see this game anywhere, just walk away. You can find much better than this.
