Star Fox 64 is one of the greatest space shooters ever made, and it has such a high replay value.

User Rating: 9.5 | Star Fox 64 N64
Highs: Controls and gameplay are great, level design is excellent, music is also fantastic, decent voice acting(DO A BARREL ROLL!), cool secrets, a ton of fun to play.

Lows: Too short, gameplay is a little too fast to find secrets.

Verdict: SF64 is one of those games that will make you want to play it again after you have beaten it.

In 1993, Nintendo wowed a ton of people with the Super FX chip powered space shooter Star Fox for the Super Nintendo. After the success of the original game and the cancellation of Star Fox 2, how would Nintendo follow up to the original? Since they moved the next game in the series to the N64, they brought us Star Fox 64, released in 1997. In SF64, you play as Fox McCloud, who is on a mission with team Star Fox to stop the evil emperor Andross who is attacking the Lylat System, and avenge his father's death. Playing SF64 is very similar to it's predecessor, but a ton more polished, and it controls so much nicer than the original. The gameplay is much faster than the original as the barrel rolls, laser fire is much more active, responsive, and quick. There are many secrets in the game that can decide which planet you go to next, and also have alternate plots to it as well. The music is fantastic as it blends in with the level you are currently playing, and most of that music is used in the newer Star Fox games. The voice acting is alright too, and the most memorable line is Peppy saying "DO A BARREL ROLL!!" SF64's level design is excellent too, as each stage has good graphics, a challenging atmosphere, and lots of obstacles too. SF64 is great, but there are problems. The game is very short, and it feels kind of unfinished because I'm sure Nintendo meant to do more with this game. Also, it can be a little tricky to find secrets, as the gameplay is fast at times. But overall, Star Fox 64 is nothing short of a masterpiece. This game has not aged one bit, and it's no wonder people still play it today. This game is cheap and easy to find on Ebay and Amazon, so pick up a copy whenever you can because this is a must have for any N64 owner.
