User Rating: 8.3 | Spyro the Dragon PS
This is the first of the fully 3D platformers that the Playstation has been crying out for since its birth. This game trys to be Sony's answer to Super Mario 64 and almost pulls it, due to clever and well thought out design, however falls just short of that masterpiece. Its a rollicking good ride though, and you'd be mad not to give it a go. Spyro the Dragon, is naturally a Dragon, living life peacefully in his Dragon World, (a mix of Disney and Looney Tunes), when a reporter is asking them about Gnasty Gnorc. The Draons diss him, and in seeing this, Gnasty Gnorc gets somewhat upset, and turns all the Dragons bar Spyro into stone. This is where your adventure begins. There are 6 levels in each of the 6 different worlds, with each of the worlds almost a level in themselves. There is much too see and do, and Dragons to save, however, for the most part you will be racing from area to area, collecting gems, head charging, breathing fire and gliding. The levels have been designed well, with some great touches that makes full use of Spyro's powers, and a gradual learning curve so the game is never too hard. The enemies in the game are funny - very well animated and varied. You will need different approaches to the many different enemies throuhout the game, some are susceptible to fire, others to charging. The controls are well implemented, and Spyro moves easily. You dont even need analog support, such is the fluidity with the d-pad. Camera problems are non-existant, with an easy to follow camera. You will never be lost or overwhelmed, despite the large levels, you can easily move, and find your way. Graphics are sumptious, each and every animated enemy is well designed, the environmnts are varied, with some pleasing touches, even Spyro is fluid and easy on the eye. Overall, this is the closest thing to Super Mario 64 on the Playstation on its release. If the game was slightly less repetitive, and a little harder, this would have scored higher, however, this is a great alternative to what many have claimed a perfect game.
