You may be able to paint the walls red, but you can't cover the cracks.

User Rating: 8 | Splatterhouse X360
Splatterhouse is not the greatest game in the world, in fact it is far from perfect. The 8.0 I rated this game is used very loosly. Well, first off let me start with the story and work myself down, ending with whether or not I thought the game was fun.

1. Story: The story in Splatterhouse follows the story of the original arcade game, which went by the same name. The game starts out with the main protaganist, named Rick, collapsed on the floor of a strange house leaking blood and internal organs all over the floor in full HD. A few feet from him, there is a mysterious mask lying on the floor and is convinced to try it on. After he puts it on, Rick turnes into a giant monster that is hellbent on rescuing his girlfriend, Jenny. The story is one of the games stronger parts, there is nothing really wrong here. The only complaint I have is that some of the characters need development, which can be fixed in the second game (For example: Dead Space 2, Isaac didn't talk and you couldn't see his face in the first game. Then the second comes along, and he suddenly has a face and is talking quite well.) So that problem can be fixed easily, but the only two characters that need a little more development is Rick and Jen.

Story Score:8.0

2. Gameplay: The gameplay is one section that needs adjustment. Since this is classified as a Hardcore Action game like God of War and Devil May Cry, I will compare it to them in terms of playstyle. I do not own PS3, and I never played God of War so I do not have much room to talk. But I do own Devil May Cry 2, 3, and 4. Now, comparing the HUD (Heads Up Display) with that of DMC's HUD; you can see that they are very similar, (you have your health and power bar in the upper left hand corner of the screen, etc.) Alright now let's get down to it. I'm going to start with the core of every HA game, the moves. In the way of cool moves to pull off, there is next to none in Splatterhouse, not counting splatterkills. You can go throughout the whole game and only use three moves. And I DO speak from experience. Also, there is not very many moves to do in the first place. Plus, moves you can do are not very diverse. The six weapons, in the game, are simply just old school, classic, Friday-the-thirteenth weapons. They are also just new versions of arcade Splatterhouse's weapons, which is not a complaint.

After a few hours the gameplay can get extremely redundant and stale. To add to that, Rick just isn't that agile. "Well, what do you expect from that giant monster of a man?" If you ask me that I would say I would expect something a little like Darksiders; a big, bulky, guy but is fast and still a little agile.

Still on gameplay, anyway, in games like DMC you can taunt the enemies in battle. Which in dong so provokes the enemies during a slow point of battle, but also it allows you to see a little more into that character's personality and how he thinks. I would give an example but I need to get moving. Ok, so let's talk briefly about the only reason 90% of the people who are looking at this game are here for, the gore. If you came to this game looking for something a bit more...ugh...potent than your Call of Duty, you came to the right place. If you want extreme violence and gore then Splatterhouse delivers. There is a feture dubbed the name Splatterkills, in which you do the most violent kills ever seen in a videogame.

You can not say something good without saying something bad. The load times in the game are unacceptably long. And it is probably has something to do with the blood and gore. The regular load time span to a maximum of two minutes. And sometimes when you clear the area of enemies you end up waiting around for the next area to load. And you are usually waiting for about twenty seconds at a time. When you buy a game, you expect it to run fast and operate well. However, this is not the case with Splatterhouse.

Gameplay Score: 7.0

3. Graphics: The graphics take a more Borderlands approach. The only cutscenes that have "normal" graphics are at the very beginning and very end. There are some graphical glitches like when a platform you are standing on doesn't register and you fall through the floor without warning. So you die and are forced to wait through the terrible load times. Other than that, there is not many complaints here.

Graphics Score: 7.0

4. Fun? : Splatterhouse was a great little story with a few good moments. I had lots of fun with it and the splatterkills are just amazing. It's great while playing with a bunch a=of friends in the room who have never heard of it before. They won't be watching the game for five minutes before yelling "Oh, nasty!" and stuff. The splatterkills simpily never get old, and the bosses are fun to fight. Also, it is fun to watch Rick and the mask interact with each other throughout the game. And I am a sucker for games with really huge bosses. Not the bosses like "Holy sh-- I'm gonna die." I don't like those, I like the giant bosses that are like "I'm 6 feet tall, and He's 600 feet tall...It's an even fight!" Chapter 2 was my favorite. It is like a giant cage wrestling match.
Splatterhouse is cretainly not worth the starting $59.00, but if you can find it for like $30.00 you should definately check it out.

Fun Score: 9.0
