Not the greatest game out there, but still a fairly decent game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive was an instant success. because of the fact that the Mega Drive version sold millions they needed another game for the game gear owners who wanted another sonic game to play on the go. However, it didn't come close to the original sonic 2.

While Sonic 1 for the game gear had some aspects from the Mega Drive version, Sonic 2 for the game gear had barely any similarities with the original Sonic 2 at all. This included the quality of the level designs unfortunately.

You start out in an underground zone, which is really a bit stupid for a sonic game. The classic green hill esque level isn't until level 4. The level design is really not all that great; there's not much in the levels that is of much interest. While most of the levels in a sonic game are great speedy rollercoasters of levels, the levels in this game is basically going along straight platforms, and battering rocks, and going up springs; nothing overly special.

However, there are things like loops in the Green Hills zone which didn't make it to sonic 1 for the game gear. The game is also quite challenging, and not a cheap hard either. a sort of cat mario type of hard (not nearly as hard as cat mario though.)

Overall, this game is quite decent, but there are better game gear games.
