The repeated stages stopped what could have been a great game.

The story for all four teams, while very different, all end the same way. With Team Sonic, Sonic receives a letter from Eggman that is sure to make him rule the world. So Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles run off to stop Eggman. With Team Dark, Rouge is looking for treasure in Eggman's base, but she awakens Shadow. Once she wakes Shadow up, Omega attacks Rouge. Once Rouge breaks up the fight between Shadow and Omega, she helps them realize that all three of them are after the same goal, to defeat Eggman. With Team Rose, Amy is sad because she hasn't seen Sonic in a while, Big is sad because he lost Froggy, and Cream is sad because she has lost Cheese's friend Chocola. They think that Eggman has kidnapped their friends and so they all go off and rescue their friends. With Team Chaotix, Charmy gives Vector a walkie talkie which allows them to have contact with their newest client. Their client says that he is being held against his will from Eggman and he wants them to come and rescue them.

There's three concepts in this game. The first concept is for Teams Sonic, Dark, and Rose witch is to get to the goal as fast as possible. Unfortunately, there are glitches that may stop you from doing so or cause you to die. The second concept is for Team Chaotix witch is to collect hidden items throughout each level. The third concept is for every team witch is to collect the chaos emeralds. How you go about doing this is by collecting orbs so that you can race to the emerald. The problem I have with these concepts is that every team goes through the exact same stages in the exact same order. The only difference is that the difficulty is a little different and the stages last a bit longer. They could have just as easily done these stages in a different order for each character.

The controls are very simple and easy to perform. The only added actions are switching characters and performing a team blast. In order to switch characters, you just press the triangle or circle button. To perform a team blast, you must first have your team blast meter full and then you press the R1 button. The problems I have with the controls are that the pinball controls are horrible and can make it very hard to move around while in ball mode and that the game uses the Japanese control scheme, which means that the O button is too select and the X button is to de-select. While this may not be a problem for some, it can be quite annoying. Also, the camera isn't controlled with the right analog stick. The right analog stick is used to go into first-person mode, which is annoying since some gamers will probably be so used to using the right analog stick to control the camera that they will go into first-person mode when they try to move the camera. You also can't switch characters in the air, which causes some deaths that could have been easily avoidable. And you can't fly as high as you want which, again, could have prevented a lot of deaths.

The graphics are very good. While most critics will complain about how the characters are shiny, it's not bothersome and it's actually kinda neat.
