What went wrong?

User Rating: 3.8 | Forbidden Siren PS2
Forbidden Siren looked good when I saw it on the shelf, but after a mere few minuets of playing it when I got home, I was bored. The first mission started with me controlling some Japanese dude escaping another Japanese dude, the controls weren't easy to understand at first and I found myself being ultimately let-down by the promise of "a game from the creator of Silent Hill".

Admittedly, the game has its scary moments. Parts like being in an otherwise empty school gym in the dark, with nothing but your flashlight, and all you can hear is the grunting of a demonic creature whilst you occasionally see something move at the corner of the screen.

The Gameplay on this game is atrocious, and I was left confused by the amount characters in the game. With so many storylines going on at once it was difficult to keep up with what was happening. The way things work in this game is horrible, the multiple selections for certain things was much too confusing and at times the solution was right there in front of me, but it was overshadowed by distractions from elsewhere. The minor amount of combat in the game was ultimately awful, I used to say that survival horror games relied to much on weapons and fighting nowadays, but I will abolish those statements and say that Forbidden Siren desperately needed more guns. Mostly though, the "innovative" ability to see through the eyes of the enemy was clunky and didn't live up to its promise.

The Graphics weren't entirely bad, but that's only because you could hardly see what was going on through the darkness of the game. In the dim light some of the clothing looked well-modelled, but the faces in the game left something uneasy in me, their total lack of animation was too dead-pan and it was like watching a movie made by a bunch of 10-year-old kids. The grainy effect of the game, which worked really well in the SIlent Hill games, was somehow wasted on this game, it didn't seem to fit well with the overall scheme of things.

The Sound in this game was atrocious. The dialogue and voice acting made me cringe and laugh out loud, and when I showed the game to a friend she actually asked me if it was some sort of joke. The dialogue was as dry as could be, but sometimes boring dialogue can be brought to life by fantastic voice acting... with Forbidden Siren this wasn't the case. The actors and actresses providing the voices sounded either bored or completely inexperienced at their job, my biggest fear with this game was that they were actually paid for their work.

Overall, Forbidden Siren promised a lot of things, but it barely lived up to any of them. Try it if you want, but it won't really be worth your while.
