Can I ask if games on the iPad/iPhone are considered to be handheld (I would assume it's 'mobile')? If not, they should start a whole section for that, because there are amazing games on there that really deserve some recognition.

Whoever has LBP Vita will know how that should have won

If anyone thinks this game shouldn't have won, you are completely wrong. You must have not played the game. While I too think that Persona 4 should have been nominated, it would have lost anyways as one, it is a remake and two, it was already nominated for GOTY on PS2, so it had little chance of winning anyways. The plot in this game is fantastic, and has 24 endings leaving tons of replay value. If you have yet to play this game, you must. It is the best handheld game this year, with one of the best stories and characters of 2012.

Gamespot actually does something i agree with. Is everyone SURE the world didn't end?

No Persona 4? Not even on the nominees?

thank you gamespot! Now I'm always gonna visit gamespot all the time. Thank you for giving this Virtue's last reward the recognition it totally deserves.

P4G should have been nominated.

@WeskerTeam I would agree with and P4 was one of my fave games of all time but P4G is just a port of a great ps2 game but still a PS2 game. I wouldn't agree to give the handheld game of the year to a port of a console game.

Anyway I'm just so happy VLR won it!

What?! Zero escape is 999 sequel? i think i need to play this game ASAP!

Well deserved, Zero Escape is hands down the best choice for winning this category. For those who haven't played it yet DO IT NOW!

I said it in a couple other listings, but this just makes me wonder what the people are using when doing these, cause it's some strong stuff to not be capable of even nominating Persona 4 Golden here... Sound Shapes may be an interesting game to play, but it's a joke to put that or a rehash and downgraded version of Littlebig Planet. Ahead of Persona 4 Golden...

Lynx_7
Lynx_7 like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @capnahdharr Remakes aren't eligible, that's why Persona 4 wasn't nominated.

LiquidBullet
LiquidBullet

@Lynx_7  @capnahdharr By that logic Spelunky shouldn't've been nominated. My bet is that P4Golden probably came out past the deadline, maybe? But then...no, Far Cry 3 was even later...hmm...

Ka3DX
Ka3DX

@LiquidBullet  @Lynx_7  @capnahdharr Not only was P4G a repackaged port of a PS2 game, I'm fairly sure it had been nominated for game of the year on the PS2, although I don't know if it won.

i think sound and shapes is more uniq

Why is it that the PS3 and Xbox 360, which are honestly very similar platforms, each get their own category for game of the year but 3DS and Playstation Vita, two systems that don't even have the same number of screens, get lumped together in one category?

Oh wow, this is out of left field. Not undeserved though. Revelations was surprisingly good too though, certainly seeing the other RE iterations this year.

Yay, now I just need to play and beat 999 so I can enjoy Virtue's Last Reward :P

@abHS4L88 You had the same idea as me. I am working through 999 right now and plan to get to Virtue's Last Reward directly after.

Massive props to Gamespot for this choice. Choosing a pretty niche game as handheld GotY takes some guts, but VLR really deserves it. And to think that this game was really just a massive prequel to Volume 3, this series will go out with a bang, that's for sure!

Mc_Trickz

Well..i can't agree with them at all,Resident Evil Revelations is Epic,i didn't played a awesome RE game for years and this one was a back in the days...

kivos

@Mc_Trickz You don't really have the right to disagree unless you have also played zero escape as well.

gamerguy20097
gamerguy20097

@kivos  @Mc_Trickz Agreed. If you've never played the game how can you say that RE is better? There is no logic in that.

Something I do not like about this year's GameSpot's Best Games of 2012 is the lack of reasons why the winners where chosen. For example, why did Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward won "Handheld Game of the Year." It seems to me that this year's presentation could not compare to past years which I felt their presentations were better.

I'm going to have to give this game a try.  But I can't pull away from P4G just yet.
