Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga

After playing and fully enjoying the previous Shin Megami Tensei game entitled Nocturne, I have been highly anticipating Digital Devil Saga. You could say that the last game made me a fan of the series. Can Digital Devil Saga live up to the quality game that Nocturne was?

Story:
Once again the story is a bit anime cliche but very good, but is far better than Nocturne in my opinion. You are Serph a 20 something that leads a tribe known as the Embryon, whom is vying for control of a place known as the Junkyard , for the gang whom gains control of the Junkyard, may ascend to Nirvana. One day while in the middle of a battle against another tribe, they discover a mysterious Egg shaped object in the battle field. The object glows and turns everyone into demons. While leaving behind a young girl with odd colored hair, now they must try to survive in this radically changed world, and help this young lady get home.

Graphics:
Like Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga is also easily one of the most gorgeous looking RPG's I have ever played. Digital Devil Saga is also one of the most beautiful cell-shaded games out there, and game will literally trick you into believing that you are playing in an anime. The post-apocalyptic world is dark gloomy and designed extremely well.

Music:
The Music in this game is dark and does a really good job setting the mood of a post-apocalyptic demon infested world. The sound effects are greatly improved over Nocturne, but I would have still liked to have had more variety in the sounds of my enemies, and allies during battle.

Game play:
Digital Devil Saga controls much like Nocturne with many differences. Each Character has their strengths and weaknesses that must be taken into account. But their attacks do not have to be limited to the types that their demon form has given them. They can purchase the ability to learn new skills and powers. Also the Characters also have the option to revert to their human form which can come in handy because some enemies are weaker to your human form. The camera still posts problems but is greatly improved over Nocturne making things much easier to get around the beautifully designed levels.

Design:
The designers of Digital Devil Saga made a gorgeous and amazing world in which you get to explore. The story's dark overtones and adult characters set this game apart for the rest of the glut of RPG's on the PS2. Character design is excellent and disturbing while helping to convince you that everyone in the "Junkyard" has become demons, including some having mouths where one shouldn't. If there is something that I find interesting is that I feel Digital Devil Saga is easier than Nocturne, while this opens the series up to the more casual gamer I find it a little disappointing personally.

I highly recommend this game especially if you are a fan of RPG's, Anime, or just looking for a quality PS2 game, buy it before the limited amount of copies of this game disappear.
