The Awakened lets you control 2 lifeless robots apparently named Sherlock and Watson.

I think this game has a great premise. Sherlock Holmes + Cthulhu. Overall I'd rate myself as a moderate to above average Sherlock Holmes fan and about a moderate/slightly ignorant H.P Lovecraft fan. I like the ideas in the few Lovecraft stories I've read but I've read and seen way more Sherlock Holmes by comparison.

Unfortunately, aside from a few interesting puzzles, that's all the praise I can give this game. The Awakened (Remastered) suffers from a lot of unforgivable laziness in all aspects. The story is about as half baked as you can get. Its just puzzles and then some boring story bits, and then puzzle etc. Then there are the characters, who are dull; incredibly laughably dull. They are so one dimensional feeling. Holmes and Watson are just names attached to our characters who vaguely resemble some sort of composite of Holmes-like material.

Watson in particular is a waste of space. He is a complete bore whose voice and overall lack of any sort of brain activity really bothered me. He is of absolutely no help at all. In fact, one of his biggest moments involves him totally blowing it. So I guess it's a good thing Holmes KNEW he would screw up and planned accordingly. OK, so he repeats the same short, laughable sentence any time you interact with him. "What do you make of this, Holmes?" He never has anything else to say when you click on him...ever. (Why even let the player interact with him at all?) Aside from that sentence his big lines are basically "Oh My God, Holmes" and "I don't get it" (Which also get repeated several times) You do get to control him occasionally while Holmes is busy. But his tasks are nothing more than boring fetch quests. Which is of course, as thrilling as it sounds.

The writing and dialogue in this game are the biggest let down for me. I suppose I was spoiled by the infinitely better "Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes" games. And those games weren't exactly perfect either, but the writing and the dialogue, as well as the "Holmes feel" were spot on.

The gameplay is very awkward, neither 1st or 3rd person is particularly helpful in all situations, and frequently they both suck. If I haven't made it clear, this game was a chore to get through, because it was so dull. Not once did I feel like Sherlock Holmes investigating some mystery. After the end (which was a conceptual gas station restroom) I was thinking "What happened to the Cthulhu thing? Wasn't there supposed to be something like that in here....?" There are a few interesting/fun puzzles to be found but it's so not worth it. Also there really isn't a whole lot of "remastering" here that I can tell. It doesn't even support true widescreen. Which is dumb.
