Serious Sam 2 is a long, fun game that tries to make changes to standard FPS formulas and does well to do so at times

I'm a big Serious Sam fan and there is a reason for this. Serious Sam combines all that made the FPS genre famous with the awesome pick-up and play elements of arcade games. So when Serious Sam 2 was announced I was more than hyped about playing this game, but did it deliver? Indeed it did.

In this Xbox version of Serious Sam 2, there are a few changes. The graphics have been toned down, it ain't that bad, because the effects and speed of the game remain intact for the majority of the adventure, but it is disappointing since the Xbox is capable of so much more. However, this is the only limitation of the Xbox version.

Serious Sam 2 has some of the most hilarious voice acting. There are claims that the jokes are tried a little too hard, but you'll be laughing throughout the adventure.

There are a variety of popular references - to Star Wars, NFL and other video games. It is clear that Serious Sam isn't actually that serious when you play it and a spoof of what makes gaming and the references it makes famous.

With that being said though, it works in conjunction with the game itself, very well. I mentioned earlier the game has arcade features and these work well: there is a life system, a point system and many other daft variations.

In fact the weapons themselves are fun to use, these involve the standard shotgun, machine gun and the good ole' rocket launcher. However there are other weapons like the exploding parrot, the cannon and the Serious bomb which are all original and well designed weapons.

Problems with Serious Sam 2 are that it can sometimes get boring - which is perhaps it tries too hard to please standard FPS players and the fans the series has gained from the beginning.

It also seems to recycle some of the elements throughout the game, with similar level layouts at times, reused music and voices and annoying sections of the game that are OTT.

Also, while the life system is good, normal FPS fans would feel alien to this change and be frustrated that there are no quick save options, unlike the PC version.

Overall however Serious Sam 2 is a long, fun game that tries to make changes and does well to do so at times. I can recommend this game to people wanting a new FPS game and willing to try something different, but if you're looking for the best, you're better off avoiding this.
