It would seem over the years that role-playing games have lost their touch, whether it is the plot, interesting characters, gameplay, originality, etc.. But this game has all of these elements, and is definitely worth playing.

Gameplay:
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is a strategic turn-based RPG with 3D graphics and Anime sprites for characters and backgrounds. While the back cover stresses that there is "no more level grinding", this game has a unique character development system that strengthens party members based on in-game interaction rather than spending countless hours mowing down the same enemies over and over again.

If you only enjoy an RPG game that has grinding, finding items, customizing characters and leveling up etc., some RPG veterans may find this game to be a major disappointment because it has NONE of those elements. The voice acting is decent, but the compelling story and immersive gameplay more than makes up for some of it's missing elements.

Another interesting factor to this game is that it requires reflexes and ability to read and understand dialogue at a quick pace. This is actually a fresh breath of air for veterans and newcomers alike, and constantly keeps you involved in the game's plot. If you are somewhat handicapped or have trouble comprehending things quickly, then this game will be unforgiving, since there are tons of dialogue throughout and each party member has a different personality. Sometimes these interactions are timed and involve saying something loud or soft, staring, touching softly or hard etc.. Saying the wrong things to people can be humorous, but you have to remember that their strength comes through close bonds and not swatting down enemies and bosses. At first, most of the characters can be quite intimidating, and should not discourage you from playing.

The story is in a fictional setting and takes place in the city of New York. It also takes place in the year of 1928, though some things may seem backwards. For example, steam-power TV's and cars, old school clothing and furniture, steam-powered mechs, etc.. While there are some references to American culture, the player must keep in mind that this game was originally intended for Japanese audiences.

This game is a true gem, especially for those who love watching Anime and RPG gamers that love a good plot that allows them to make their own choices. While 20+ hours may not seem like a lot of time for an RPG game, this game has tons of enjoyable dialogue, as well as memorable characters and multiple endings that add to it's replay value. Still, with it's minor flaws and missing elements, this game is definitely a rare and original piece of art worth playing.
