The only racing game I really like!
Graphics have a weird movie like quality to they everything is pseudo 3D with odd coloring at times, there is weird greyness. Animation is great! There are few things funnier than timing a kick at exactly the right moment to knock somebody into the path of an oncoming car, hearing the massive CRRRRRRRRASHHHH, watching them go sailing through the air effortlessly before landing on the hard road with a yelp, then running them over as they try to get up! So funny! Fighting with the bikers is also extremely fun with the weapons on offer. Getting somebody right in the head with a crowbar and hearing the solid CLANG! as you give them a fractured skull is just so satisfying.
Sound effects are fantastic with the crashing noises being the standout. They are so wince inducing and sound so devastating that they just never get old. The screams grunts and yelps of bikers and the painful sounding weapon effects add a huge amount to the game and ensure you will just laugh your way through the whole thing.
The music is terrible. Shocking attempts at synthesizing just sound terrible. Turning the music off in favor of the bike engines isn’t much better since it sounds a lot like a bee opera or something. Sadly this lets the sound down but the sound effects more than make up for it.
The gameplay is insanely fun. As mentioned above, you are a biker out to win by any means necessary by trying to knock the willies out of your opponents. They do fight back but the action doesn’t really start to hot up till later in the game where your opponents get far more aggressive and faster. Sadly other bikers don’t fight each other, only you which sucks. It could be that the genesis just couldn't handle all those AI routines at once but it would have added heaps to the game. Still it proves to be lots of fun
Road rash is a long game too it have 5 levels with combinations of the sam e seven tracks just getting much longer each time. this may not sound long that much but road rash is pretty darn hard with ever faster bikes super aggressive opponents and the races being so long that just keeping your bike in one piece becomes hard. Its always fun tho.
There are a lot of bikes to buy and eight weapons as well including crowbars, ckubs electric cattle prods and mace.
Road rash is an extremely fun, varied and funny racer and one of the very few racing games I like. You owe it to yourself to play this classic!
