Over-the-top gory & quirky FPS experience from now disfunct 3D Realms, cannot keep up with their other titles though

User Rating: 6.5 | Rise of the Triad: Dark War PC
Rise of the Triad: Dark war, or oddly enough abbreviated as ROTT is Apogee's (later 3D Realms) follow up game to Wolfenstein 3D, but it soon departed from the former's style and visuals, becoming a game of its own. Obviously, the whole FPS structure is intact. A gui at the bottom, loads of weapons and shouting enemies that blow to bits should you decide to go with the bazooka instead of the pistol. The game's gore however is so cartoony and over-the-top it cannot really considered brutal. It is more a sort of gore-pulp. The level design is not really my cup of tea with too many open areas and textures that do not reminiscent anything I can relate to, unlike Duke Nukem 3D for example which had been cherished by critics (and by me) for it's nice setting and graphical implemntation of it. Be this as it may, ROTT is a solid FPS experience and give the fact that it was part of the first wave of FPS, it is definitely worth trying. Nowadays, I find that not many companies decide to colour their games in a such a sarcastic and pulpy way as 3D Realms used to do. Duke, Redneck Rampage and ROTT are all distinguished by their odd sense of humouros appeal. Although you could not jump in ROTT (which I frequently tried nonetheless, bashing my poor spacebar), there are many platformer elements in the game, getting on elevaing touchpads in time and so forth, something I never liked in a game but I did not hurt too bad in ROTT. There is also the choice of multiple protagonists which are "supposed" to have different abilites but I did not get around to try that. It is not something I am looking for in a 3D shooter anyway. The graphics are solid for the time and from what I heard there is also a GlVersiom around, but I thought id stick with the original. Thanks to my friend @azghouls for sending me the link though.
