A crazy floating techno music-maker-shooter on rails....rock on.

User Rating: 8.1 | Rez PS2
Rez is quite the interesting game. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started playing this, but it didn't take me very long to be completely hooked and pleased with what I was experiencing.

I think the real highlight to this game is a mix between the visuals and the music. It's like a make your own techno game, but with these crazy wire visuals. And everything goes with the music. My favorite part about it all is the controller vibrating to the beat. Even though it sounds like just a small detail, it really adds a lot to the experince.

In theory this game is really a shooter. Enemies fly by on screen and you lock on (up to 8 at a time) then release your stuff and destroy them. The coolest part is the locking on, shooting and destroying all makes noise that adds to the levels music. So, by destroying things in different patterns you can alter the song to how you'd like to hear it. It's just an awesome concept in general and on top of that it was executed well.

As I said, the graphics are all like wire frames. There's hardly any solid items and it looks really awesome. Since you are supposed to be "de-rezzing" and hacking into computer systems it really gives it a cool feel like you are getting into the system. Not to mention it just looks awesome in general. it also adds to the busy feel of the music because there is just so much everywhere for your mind to comprehend.

The game also offers some interesting boss fights. They are each a bit tricky at first to figure out exactly what your goal is. They all share one thing, and thats a lot of area to shoot at which means a lot of music making. They are all fairly fast paced to so it requires you to be continuously thinking about whats going on.

Since the game is on rails and your character is always moving the only way to avoid incoming attacks is to shoot them down. This also requires you to be alert because sometimes things get fairly hectic and you'll be shooting all over the place.

Your health is in the form of levels. You'll collect certain items as you progress through levels that will level up your character. You'll character will make some real cool changes as he gains levels. But everytime you take a hit you level down so you'll want to be very careful. If you level down to much then you'll die and have to start the level over again. However, you can start from a specific level at any time, you do not have to beat the game from level 1 to the end everytime.

Although the length is rather short you'll probably play this game several times through due to its nature. Also, the game is lacking any real substance to make it a true masterpiece game and comes off more as something you'll pick up every now and then a play a bit of. Not really having a story doesn't help to keep you hooked either.

It's definitly something any real gamer should experience. Its a really cool concept and a really well executed game. Keep an eye for it and add it to your collection.
