An excellent WWII multiplayer experience that is worth your time to at least try.

User Rating: 9.8 | Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory PC
If you hadn't noticed, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is the remnants of the expansion to RTCW. It's a multiplayer-only free download based in the European and North African theatres of WWII. Since it's simply a multiplayer WWII game, there's not much to talk about here. But i can give you the basics. The graphical quality is pretty good. While it may seem unimpressive today, it looked great in the year of it's release. The sound is good too. Each weapon has it's own distinct sound. Voice-overs and other special effects sound great too. My favorite sound is that of exploding humans.

Now, the gameplay is what will get you hooked. You select to play as either the Axis or Allies, same as most games of the genre. Then you select a class. Each class has certain weapons it can use. The classes consist of Soldier (aka Heavy Weapons), Medic, Engineer, Covert Op, and Field Op. What's interesting about this is that you earn experience in each class and level up. When you level, you gain attributes and abilities for use inside that class. You can switch classes midgame. You also earn experience in the areas of "Battle Sense" and Light Weapons. These improve combat abilities rather than class abilities. Experience can also earn you military ranks. Your experience, levels, and ranks are reset when you go to a different server. Some servers save your experience so you won't lose progress when you visit it again.

The gameplay is quite different than most FPS games. Sure, you'll try to rack up as many kills as you can, but that's not the main point. This game doesn't feature modes like DM or CTF. It is completely objective driven. You will be traveling through the map trying to reach a certain goal, which range from escorting tanks to blowing up AT guns to invading and taking over fortresses. It gives the multiplayer a true feel of war, and almost a storyline. The environment changes as you get closer to accomplishing your goal. Walls will be destroyed, spawn points will move, and areas of concentrated combat will shift. You may think that doing the same objectives over and over would get boring, but it doesn't. The game always manages to remain exciting. It just feels like a more realistic take on war. It's a nice break from the standard run-and-gun deathmatch found in most games of this genre.

There is a reason this is one of the most played PC games. This game is just plain great. It is an exciting and suspenseful experience that cannot be missed by anyone that considers themself a fan of FPS games...or anyone that calls themself a gamer. A free download that is worth your time to at least try.
