The best Gun Survivor yet and a pleasant addition to the RE library...

User Rating: 7.9 | Resident Evil: Dead Aim PS2
Resident Evil Dead Aim is by far the best of the Capcom’s Gun Survivor series, RE Survivor and Dino Stalker bringing up the rear of a sad series of shooters. Unlike the first Survivor, Dead Aim has GunCon2 support which is a nice change and switches from third to first-person for shooting, unlike Dino Crisis’s campy first-person arcade shooter style.

The story takes place on a high-jacked cruise liner where you take control of a new character to the series, Bruce McGivern, a member of the anti-Umbrella group US-STRATCOM. Here you meet up with various enemies, including RE regulars like zombies and hunters and some new, challenging bosses like Pluto, a giant blob-like creature who relies of its sense of hearing to beat you down and a surprisingly difficult version of the always popular Tyrant, who thankfully has a weak spot you’ll learn about while playing. Besides the usual enemies, the main bad guy in Dead Aim is one of the most enjoyable of the RE games, Dr. Morpheus Duvall, a former Umbrella researcher obsessed with beauty, only his idea of beauty is a little skewed. Morpheus steals a sample of the T-Virus and an Umbrella cruise liner and so the story begins.

Along the way you meet the third main character of the game, Fong Ling, a Chinese government agent, whom you’re not quite sure to trust or kill at first. She brings a little surprise and good timing here and there in the game, and is sometimes reminiscent of Steve Burnsides (CVX) or Carlos Olivera (RE3) is her ability to pop up out of nowhere and help you out. After one run-through of the entire game you have the ability to play as her which is a nice bonus.

There are several key reasons why this Gun Survivor is better than its predecessors. Graphically, Dead Aim is undoubtedly superior, seamless environments and smooth, realistic characters add to what is a visually pleasing game. The environment details do not go unnoticed, although every inch of the map is not physically realistic, as in you cannot reach every little corner, there is noticeably a vast improvement. The full motion videos are of the main series quality, very detailed, exciting and bring into this Survivor more of a story than any of the others. The characters are unforgettable, humanized and could easily be introduced into the main story line as opposed to the protagonist of Gun Survivor 1, Ark Thompson. And finally, the story itself. The storyline for Dead Aim actually plays out like the developers thought about how they wanted the story to go. It is entertaining and well-written and makes you want to follow the characters to the next chapter.

The one tragic flaw of Resident Evil Dead Aim is that it is way too short! Other than that, it’s a decent GunCon2 shooter and a pleasant addition to the Resident Evil library. This is recommended as a rental for anyone who would like to see what it’s about.
