The way horror games are meant to be

User Rating: 9.5 | Resident Evil 4 PS2
Resident Evil 4 is one of the latest horror fests produced by Capcom and it would be not giving this game enough credit to call it brilliant as it is single-handedly the best survival horror game of the 21st century.
There are some substantial changes made to RE 4 and it is very different compared to the rest of the series but that is in a good way. In the game you play as Leon S. Kennedy which some of you might remember was one of the main heroes of Resident Evil 2.The game is set in central Europe and revolves around Leon locating the president of Americas missing daughter. Leon’s adventure seems to be going smoothly until he is almost assaulted by a man with an axe. This may seem different from the monsters of the previous games but in retrospect they are in fact more dangerous than any zombie.
The game play of RE4 uses a 3D camera meaning the action is shown from over Leon’s shoulder and the same happens for gunplay as much of it is fought in close quarters and means the action is far more intense than any of the previous games.
Throughout the game Leon will encounter more dangerous foes and will need to find and customise weapons in order to make them more powerful. To do this money must be used to buy these weapons and the upgrades which accompany them are always brilliant to try for the first time.
Often throughout the game Leon will come across near death moments in which the player must press specific buttons on the controller in order to avoid certain and bloody death.
The graphics of RE4 are truly astounding and considering this game is a port, the final product loses almost none of its astonishing graphical power.
The sound of the game is sheer awesome. Anything from the sound of a door creaking to the roar of a chainsaw will almost constantly frighten the player every time.
The best part of RE4 however has got to be the real-life physics. There is so much fun to be had when killing the Ganado’s (a.k.a enemies) in this game. Shooting them in the leg will cause them to stumble, shooting a Ganado’s hand will cause them to drop their weapon and blasting them in the face with a shotgun will cause their head to explode in a mighty spray of blood. All these situations add a depth of strategy to the game and make it more entertaining to play.
To summarise, Resident Evil 4 is a brilliant game that defines the survival horror genre in a way which no other games have. I recommend that anyone with a game cube or PS2 purchase this game as it is amazing and will not be forgotten for years to come.
