Explosive way to start off your PSP game collection.

Ratchet and Clank is my first experience gaming on the PSP because it came with the Entertainment Pack when I bought my system. This game is really action packed; it's part shooter, part platformer with a bit of racing and Mario Kart style battle mode.

The graphics are pretty good but nothing special. They have an exaggerated cartoon look with mostly bright colors. Special effects for all of the cool weapons you'll acquire though are very impressive.

R&C has you moving through many small, linear levels taking out baddies with ever more powerful weapons. The best part about this game is how the developers keep mixing it up in terms of variety of things to do. You can acquire many different weapons and upgrade each one to higher levels of devastation as well as buy add-ons to increase accuracy or my favorite, QUAD lacerator laser blasters!

Some other ways they keep the action fresh is by having mini-games like the rail-riding to open locks, destruction derby's with Clank or racing on hover boards. Each one of these diversions are really fun once you get the hang of the controls. But it takes some time at first which can be a bit frustrating.

The game gets progressively more intense as one moves to harder levels and the boss battles are invigorating although it's too bad there are so few.

There are only a few sore spots in this game but they are quiet problematic. The camera controls will have you fighting to keep enemies in your sights. Many times death by camera is a reality here. Luckily there are several control schemes to allow you to pick the best one for you which makes it somewhat more manageable. Some of the continue points are oddly placed as well. If you die it often means repeating part of a level or worse when you're trying to get back to a boss fight and have to jump through the hoops again.

The game is fun enough to play through a second time to further upgrade your weapons and face more difficult baddies and multiplayer adds a lot of replay value. The sad part is that when I was trying to create my account to get online, the game just wouldn't accept any of my passwords even when i followed the requirements.

All-in-all R&C: Size Matters is a well executed shooter-platformer that has built upon the best ideas of previous games in the genre. It doesn't offer anything ground-breaking aside from the awesome weapons arsenal but it's a very fun, exciting game that many PSP owners will like.
