Sadly, the last Ratchet & Clank game on PS2 turns out to be the worst one.

I have been a HUGE fan of the Ratchet and Clank games. Each game brought wonderful gameplay and amusing stories and characters. Each sequel introduced new things to the gameplay so you could keep on going and enjoying the the franchise. I knew that PS2 is old now, but I still rented this game to see what it would be like. Sadly, the last Ratchet & Clank game on PS2 turns out to be the worst one.

I haven't played very far through the game. Probably because I just couldn't be bothered. Surprisingly enough, the gameplay mechanics are rather bad. Ratchet does not double jump as high as he should and thats why one part at the beginning was difficult to pass through. The camera work is just horrible and makes the game feel like a chore, and what new things there were just don't fit well. Of course, it's good that the developers always try to add new things, but they just did not work and the gameplay is simply dull and far from addictive thanks to its bad execution and no new features that are interesting enough.

Graphically, it just looks plain ugly. Yes, I know that the proper version is on PSP and graphics may be mildly inferior to consoles, but they should have tried to make the game look better than it actually is. It is amazing how PS2 game makers do not even bother, because just before 360 came, these developers tried to release games with PS2 graphics to be as good as possible. Yes, PS2 graphics cannot hope to match the 360 and PS3 graphics, but when old platforms have been showing their highest potential it makes no sense they should drop so low just because next generation has arrived. Graphics in PS2 games just started to get worse and worse now, just so bad that some could be released on PS1 almost. That along with corny animation makes this game's presentation very, very unconvincing.

Story does not have a bad idea, but it does not flow as well as the original games did. I realised that characters may have been lacking enough personality. This is new to me, because no other R&C game actually did that to me. I liked the R&C games not just for their gameplay and graphics, but also for their funny, memorable characters and storylines that were easy to follow because they were interesting. Don't expect that here.

It is very sad and frustrating that the series had to end by suffering this embarrassment which was not even developed by Insomniac games - although that could be a good thing because they have done so well with most (if not all) of their games, that it would be a shame to see them in particular go downhill. If you are a huge fan who was taking an interest in this title, forget it if you do not want to experience the disappointment that you don't deserve. Better to stick to the PSP version than this terrible port.
