A nice little time waster; assuming you have the money for the monthly fee.

In this day and age, it's hard to find a really good RPG for the PC. Elder Scrolls comes to mind, as does Diablo II and World of Warcraft. But face it. The majority of the PC players today tend to focus on games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, along with the occassional Quake and Unreal Tournament. In 2001, when Ragnarok Online was open for the public, many gamers had a new game to suck their lives into.

The first thing that you'll notice when you first start playing Ragnarok Online are the colors and environments of the game. The environments are colorful and jump out at you. But some of the newer cities are just plain gorgeous. The towns each have their own feel to them, which is perfect for anyone that just wants to relax in a place that makes them comfortable. The dungeons themselves each have their own design as well, and some of them are pretty expansive. The best thing about the graphics though are the characters that look like Playstation type sprites, but they're well detailed.

Ragnarok Online sports a unique soundtrack to say the least. Each town has their own theme, whereas some dungeons share the same theme. It really amazed me that somehow, the music playing in a dungeon or field somehow fit the current position you're in. I don't know why, but it just felt like that. Although the sound effects aren't exactly the best there is, it's still decent.

Ragnarok Online enables you to become a variety of classes. You need to start off as a first classer, and then once you reach a certain Job Level, you can change into a class that corrosponded to your first class. For example, let's say that you decided to be a Thief. Once you meet the requirements, you can turn into either a Rogue or Assassin. There are a bunch of classes to play as, each with their own unique skill list. However, what I found to be the best out of this, was that you can make different builds for your character. Like if you were a Knight, you could be a Spear Knight instead of a Two-Handed Sword Knight. Or you could be a Battle Priest instead of a Support Priest.

But there's just more to leveling and becoming the strongest of your class. There are several sidequests you can do, which requires a lot of time picking up certain items to make it. The difficulty of the item can vary, depending on the items you need to get. I thought this was a nice add-on, since it showed that not all RPGs have to be about leveling.

Leveling takes a long time on the official server. The rates are 1/1/1 (1 Base, 1 Job, 1 Drop), meaning it'll take you a long time to get a high level, and you'll be jumping from different places to find new temporary leveling spots. And since you can't tackle all enemies (namely MvPs), the game encourages teamwork to help each other eliminate the stronger enemies in the game. But since a lot of people play the game, expect a lot of the leveling places to be crowded all the time.

All in all, Ragnarok Online is a great experience to try at least once. You get a free trial when you first download the software, and then you pay a small montly fee from there on out. If there's one thing that might kill some people, it's that you need to download huge amounts of programs which are big in size if you wish to play the game. Still, if you're looking for something that help'll you pass the time, Ragnarok Online is the game for you.
