Konami posts $195 million profit

Japanese publisher saw sales rise to $2.56 billion for last nine months of 2008, thanks to 4.5 million sales of Metal Gear games; full-year outlook lowered, however.

Solid Snake continues to get it done for Konami. Today, the Japanese game maker reported its results for the April-December period, saying that total revenues for the first nine months of its 2009 fiscal year grew 5.1 percent to ¥234 billion ($2.56 billion). Konami's profit margins also continued to outpace the year-ago period, given that net income rose 17.3 percent to ¥17.8 billion ($195 million).

Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in June, continued to be one of the company's top performers. The top-rated action adventure helped the Metal Gear series sell more than 4.5 million units in 2008. (GameSpot initially reported that Metal Gear Solid 4 sold 4.5 million units by itself, but the figure includes all games in the franchise. GameSpot regrets the error.)

For the first nine months of its current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, Konami has sold 22.35 million software units across its various franchises. In addition to Metal Gear's gains, the publisher has been bolstered by the success of its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise, which has sold more than 7.41 million units during the nine-month period. Other top performers for the game company include Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for the Nintendo DS, as well as installments in its perennial Dance Dance Revolution rhythm franchise.

Despite Konami's positive growth during the period, the publisher provided a warning to investors that the global economic downturn will have a negative impact on its full-year returns. Citing slower consumer spending and a strengthening of the yen, Konami revised its full-year revenue and profit outlook downward. The publisher now expects revenues to rise 3.2 percent to ¥307 billion ($3.36 billion) during the year, with profits now projected to grow a mere .3 percent to ¥18.5 billion ($203 million).

make a solid game for the wii and it will inject you till you blow with money konami

Too bad Konami tried that many times only to have all their games bomb on the Wii. Castlevania Judgment did nothing to help either so what is this explosive amount of profit you speak of?

I also think you need to put down the controller and read a book once on a while. Do you even realise your sentences NEVER END.

It is hard to believe that Gears 2 has already outsold MGS4 when it has not even been out half as long! A bad sign for the PS3.

Well if it isn't biased george. Did your precious Xbox 360 happen to get the RROD? GeOW2 outselling MGS4 isn't remarkable because of two reasons.

    1. 360 has a larger userbase than PS3
    2. I'm positive more people bought GeOW2 for the purpose of playing online while MGS4 offers a better single player experience.

Also selling 4.5 million copies isn't the apocalyspse for Sony. I didn't hear PS3 owners saying it was the end for Microsoft when a certain platformer called Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts only sold 144,000 copies. Get your head out of Microsoft's *** already.

Gears 2 sold more domestically than MGS4, that's for sure...sales wise internationally, Gears 2 was garbage compared to MGS4 (esp. in Japan). So I guess it depends where your talking about

The best way to get rid off the fanboys is probably going to be just to ignore them. You know who you are and we ALL know who you are.

    @Fanboys
You are not getting paid to bash and trash talk for a system so please stop posting on here and then getting your panties in a bunch.
"BETTER" is always a matter of OPINION!!!!! What works for you may not work for others, we are just so fortunate now that if we don't like something we have other options.
I have enjoyed Metal Gear even back in the days of the NES and have gotten all of the games and kept mostly all. Hideo Kojima has delivered games that I truly enjoy and I have thanked him by buying them on DAY 1.
Keep up the good work Konami and please give us another ZoE and another Castlevania game.

Whats all this frame rate issue about? The only games I've seen with frame rate problems are bad ports. & xbox360 has plenty of those as well.

only 4.2 million units sold... Gear of War 2 has sold over 5 million units so far and it was released later on in the year

If konami wants to make real proffits they need to sell on muilty platforms!

i disagree with sony fanboys wanting konami to keep this game playstation only. one the game belongs to konami not sony. two konami are a third party and should not side with ms sony or nintendo. port this to xbox konami and you will get even more sales but well done on your 4.5 million. but keeping it on playstation will only make fanboys think it is sonys game and sony do not deserve any credit for your masterpiece konami.
