Those names are used to differentiate fans/participants of any activity.
I don't see a problem with it outside of people mistakenly equating an "M" rating as a synonym for "hardcore" game.
To your first part, exactly! We're tlaking about games being hardcore tho. Games can't be hardcore, or casual. Only the gamer can. Someone can play tetris just as hardcore as someone can play Counter Strike.
On all these gaming sites and stores I'm seeing a section for "casual" games? WTF? Since when could a game be casual? Is it not how u play the game, and not the game itself that is either hardcore or not?
