What's with these racing wheel game controllers? Have none of the designers (or indeed anyone at the production companies) ever driven a race-car (or even a road-car)? I was super psyched when I borrowed my friends Microsoft racing wheel for the 360, finally I was going to get a real car-feel from PGR4! I get home and hook up the wheel, and the instant I grab the wheel, I realize that it's a STUPID construction! Don't get me wrong, the grip is great and it looks amazing, but the layout is, again, STUPID.
Okay, to give this some perspective, I have to explain to the people who aren't familiar with driving a car, what I'm talking about. When racing a car, the way you hold the wheel is often explained as gripping it ten to two, I.E. your left hand is on ten o'clock and your right hand is on two o'clock. This means your hands are some way above the horizontal center on the steering wheel. But on these game-controller wheels, ALL the buttons are placed at exactly horizontal center, which means you have to hold quarter to three, which is completely wrong. Either that, or you have to let go of the wheel with one hand to reach the handbreak button. Which is also silly, because the button is ON THE WHEEL, and not on the "dash", so you have to follow the button around when steering. It may not seem like such a big deal, but trust me, it is.
Another thing that's wrong with these controllers are the pedals, which are standing almost straight up, so you have to constantly use muscles to tilt your feet back when not having the pedal to the metal. This isn't the biggest problem though, so I won't elaborate on it.
Anyway, just an annoyed rant from someone who'd like to race other than on race-day without losing his license.
