I agree with OP with the d-pad. I personally love Fable don't get me wrong but I thought there could have been better ways to interact with NPCs. I'm not going to be too picky about it though because I managed to enjoy the game even though it was short and things were pretty simplistic in the game. There was just some sort of little charm to it that caught my attention and I devoted my time to playing it and finding all the little treasures and the legendary weapons (the few that were in the game). Though I will not say it was truly epic of anything of the sort. It was a good little RPG to play and I enjoyed every minute I spent in that game. Then again I like most RPGs, heck I enjoyed Enchanted Arms and I don't know many that did.
I would also like to address something else that was said it's nothing major but I would just like to mention it. In Fable if you flirted with another woman (or man) with your spouse around they would get jealous and I do believe talk to you or something along the lines. It has been a while since I have played Fable but I know for a fact they did something if they saw you flirting and kissing another NPC. I don't believe it was anything major though.
As for Fable 2, I am looking forward to this game greatly. I am hoping it will be longer and a lot tougher. Don't know about many of you but I found Fable rather easy. As for the NPC interaction if it is the d-pad stuff again. Oh well I am not going to be picky about it. Yes, I wish they would have gone a different route with NPC interaction but as long as they have a solid story and the game is a good length for an RPG I won't have any complaints. Now, compare this to Fallout 3 I would say Fallout 3 has the edge. I am sure Fable 2 will do well for itself but I highly doubt it will outsell Fallout 3; then again Fallout 3 is also multiplatform. But anyway, that's my two cents.
