1.) Is PS3's online as dead and empty as everyone says?
I'm going to say no. It depends on the game you are playing most of the first person shooters are still alive with online players. But some game you might have some difficulty finding someone to play with. Also you can see what your friends are playing when they are online.
2.) How does backwards compatibility work on new PS3's? Do they even have it?
The newer 80 GB and 160 GB models do not have backwards compatibility, although there is speculation Sony might release an emulator and PS2 games for download on the PSN for the newer consoles.
3.) What would you say are PS3's must-own games?
It really depends on what kind of games you like to play. I suppose everyone would agree on Little Big Planet as a must own game for anyone. If you are into FPS's Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 would be must owns.
