I love the growlanser series, because of the semi realtime tactical combat. However I'v been hearing that the new growlanser is realtime and the other characters are computer controlled. Even with a really good AI and the ability to give "comands" to the other characters, I don't belive that the stratigical elements that made the game so great will remain intact. I hope I'm wrong tho and that the blow me away with the next instalment.

I had a look at some gameplay footage and it seems your hopes will be dashed. You can only control the main character, combat is much faster now. Nowhere did I see the ability to command your allies so I assume it is done via menues before the battles start .

I'll wait for a gamespot review, befor I break down and start weeping.

@Silvaryn and everyone else.

The problem with "role playing games" as acategory or term, used in video games, is that it has no connection with what term means when used in any other context.

role playing game, implies that you take on the role of a character, as a form of entertainment. Almost every game has you take the role of a character; shooters, adventure games, even platformers. You could even say that while playing chess "You take the role of the king and send your army to defeat your enemy while you protect your self, and ensure your survival."

The problem with most RPGs is that they are basically cinematic experiences spliced with some collection and combat gameplay. People don't watch movies and say I'm taking the role of the main character, so to say that about most RPGs would be just as silly.

In psychological careers, this term is used in reference to having a person portray another persons; personality traits, dialoge, and actions. Few games really game-play element that allows you to role play a character in this sense.

This term is easily miss-used, doesn't really describe the game play elements of a game. Make your perspective of RPG to broad and almost every game is a RPG. So really the term RPG should not even be used for video games.

Wow, people must really buy common games, 95% of the games mentioned are well known

barney_calhoun_

I agree, there is only like 5 games that I don't recall on this list. I'm actually pretty disapointed.

X-seed is the developer and they were formely known as Clover who did Okami not to mention a bunch of other god awful games like god hand. #4. The hex system is beyond retarded. Some hexs have elemental properties which can either help or hurt you as you would expect. A hexagonal is six sided. Get it 6. As in Six shooter.

_AbBaNdOn

Okami and Godhand are both good games thats often are raved about by fans and critics, you make no sense calling them godawful.

[sarcasm] your right usen the shape of the battle grid to subliminally remind you of six shooters, is so retarded. Wait there are 7 hexes on the battle field so maybe they mean seven shooter [/sarcasm]

Oh and I find the repetative button mashing of your action RPGs boring.

I have never finished a final fantasy game exept for the first one. I never could get into them for some reason, and I love RPGs. So play them if you like but they are not the end all be all RPG that most make them out to be.
